Proposed Highway Maintenance 2012/13

The estimated value of highway assets in Telford and Wrekin is over £1billion. Even with additional funding, we face a significant challenge in maintaining and improving our highway assets. This is particularly challenging at a time when local government funding is under significant pressure.

We aim to allocate funding for highway and footpath maintenance on a needs basis, based on information that we gather about the condition of roads and footpaths. In addition we aim to take the views of communities into account, to ensure that our programmes reflect community priorities.

For 2012/13, we are proposing to invest around £5.7m of funding in managing and improving our highways. To invest in things such as road and footpath repairs, maintenance of bridges and structures, replacing street lights and road safety schemes.

We have developed a draft list of road and footpath maintenance schemes that can be implemented using the available budget. All sites have been inspected and require some level of maintenance work. However, there may be sites in your area that you believe to be in a worse condition than those proposed. As part of this consultation we would like you to suggest alternative sites that require work.

There is no additional funding available for road and footpath repairs so new sites are likely to have to replace those currently on the draft programme.

I would ask you to please let us have your comments no later than Friday 16 December 2011. We will then assess all the suggested additional sites and compile a final programme. This will be publicised when the final programme is developed for approval by Cabinet early in 2012.
