About council tax

Council tax replaced the old community charge (or poll tax) system on 1 April 1993.

Together with business rates, income from services and central government grants, it provides the money spent on local services, such as schools, libraries, refuse collection, social services, the police and fire authorities.

Every household has a liability for council tax. The amount each household in Telford and Wrekin pays is dependant on:

  • the value of the property
  • which parish or town council is responsible for the area that you live in
  • whether the property is occupied or unoccupied
  • whether any of the residents should be ignored for council tax purpose
