Bin review
Thank you for all your efforts to recycle and we hope that you will continue to recycle in 2012.
Rising landfill costs, mean that we and in the end, you, the Council taxpayer has to pay out more if we can't reduce the amount of household rubbish we throw away. For this reason we are always looking at how we can increase our recycling rates even further.
In November 2011 we commenced a pilot scheme in areas of Madeley and Woodside. The purpose being to see how we could help you to recycle even more. Our waste officers went out with the collection crews to look at people's recycling boxes and understand what and how much you were recycling. We are using these results to try to help you recycle more. We plan to visit more areas of Telford and Wrekin to look at recycling boxes and to solve some of your common recycling problems.
As part of this pilot officers were also available at local centres, supermarkets and schools, to answer any questions.
Last year the average household in Telford produced 669kg of waste and 520kg of recycling; this is equivalent to the weight of a small family car, such as a Mini. If each household were to throw away less in their grey bin and recycle 21kg more, equal to the weight of your average family dog, each year it would save us £200,000 a year in landfill costs. This is equivalent to only 800 grams more for every fortnightly collection, which is around 1 glass bottle and 6 plastic ones.
So if you don't already recycle your plastic bottles, rinse them, squash them and pop into your orange net, believe it or not this can really help us all to save money!
Thanks to the efforts of the residents involved in the pilot area there has been an increase in participation of the recycling service. We are now working towards expanding this scheme accross Telford and Wrekin. We will to continue to work closely with you throughout 2012/13 to improve recycling and the overall service so we can reduce the future land fill costs.
You can feedback to us any comments, suggestions or even problems that you may have by contacting us using the details on the right of this page.
