The Rifles Freedom of the Borough
In May 2010, Telford & Wrekin Council honoured the Rifles Regiment with the Freedom of the Borough in a special ceremony at the Arena in Telford Town Park. The regiment is the first to receive this honour from the authority.
The Rifles Regiment is the largest infantry regiment in the British Army, consisting of five regular and two territorial battalions, plus a number of companies.
It is the successor to the King's Shropshire Light Infantry (KSLI) with its strong historic links to the county and the borough. The Regiment has been deployed worldwide including spells in The Falklands, South Georgia, Kosovo, Belize, Iraq and Afghanistan where they have been actively involved in recent conflicts.
The event also included the unveiling of the new Remembrance Memorial near the Arena, following which the Rifles exercised the Freedom of the Borough by marching around Telford Town Centre.
