The Box Road is an integral part of Telford town centre and is in need of upgrading to reflect the growth of the borough and the significant investment in town centre facilities and attractions.
Temporary Road and Footpath Closure on Ironmasters Way and the footpath between Ironmasters Way and Euston Way, Town Centre are set to commence on Monday 19 January 2015 and anticipated to last for a duration of 12 weeks with an end date of Friday 10 April 2015. Eurovia Contracting are undertaking works to replace the footway and drainage at the pedestrian entrance to the train station, on behalf of Telford & Wrekin Council. Diversion Routes will be in place for the duration and routes from the Telford Central Train Station through to the Town Centre will be maintained.
Final surfacing will take place on St Quentins Gate junction with the International Centre starting Monday 16 February 2015 for 3 weeks and Hollinsgate Roundabout starting Monday 9 March 2015 for 3 weeks, both these junctions will be closed at night between 8pm and 6pm to allow the surfacing work to take place with minimum disruption.
The town centre is about to become a far more vibrant place with more retail, cultural and leisure facilities, more jobs and residential units. This reflects the overall growth of the borough, with the new developments at Lawley, Lightmoor and the Telford Millennium Community at Ketley alone providing over 5000 new homes. The town centre transport improvements are needed to accommodate the resulting increase in numbers of residents and visitors and improve the quality and feel of the public space.
These improvements were agreed in the Central Telford Area Action Plan, which sets out the framework for development in the town centre.
There will be improved access into all parts of the town centre for everyone, giving more route choices and better pedestrian connections between the shopping centre, which is about to receive a £200m investment in facilities, with emerging £250m Southwater development - consisting of 11 screen IMAX cinema, a hotel, bars and restaurants, improved ice rink, bowling alley, bingo - the expanded Telford International Centre, the improved Town Park, the office sector to the north, the rail station and the neighbouring residential areas of Malinslee and Hollinswood.
The Department of Transport has awarded over 60% of the funding to carry out this work and this has been matched with local funding by developers and Telford & Wrekin Council.
The Box Road scheme aims to rejuvenate the centre of Telford, to create a built environment that establishes the town as a quality destination and as a vibrant place to live and work.
The key planned improvements are to:
- reduce the impact and scale of the highway
- lower vehicle speeds
- improve pedestrian and cycleway facilities
- create attractive urban boulevards
- improve accessibility to Telford Town Centre
- improve the experience of visiting Telford
- to accommodate future growth in the town centre
Different routes will have different surfaces depending on their use.
A palette of materials has been determined for each of these routes, with strategic or well used routes receiving a higher quality public realm finish.
The Highways Agency work to improve the Forge roundabout at Junction 5 of the M54 2015 is already complete along with the improvements to Malinslee Roundabout. Work is at an advanced stage on the Box Road, Woodhouse Central and Lawn Central are substantially complete with remaining work on schedule to be completed in Spring 2015.
