Level 1 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment

In April 2007, a group comprising the then Boroughs and Districts of Shropshire, Shropshire County Council and Telford & Wrekin Council jointly commissioned the following assessment.

A Level 1 SFRA has been produced for each of the six local authorities involved, and has the endorsement of the Environment Agency, the responsible authority for flood defence in England and Wales. The outputs of the Telford & Wrekin Council Level 1 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (September 2007) provide an appraisal of the nature and extent of all types of flooding to provide the Council with the necessary information to inform planning policy production in the Borough. The document is required to ensure due regard is paid to flood risk in the creation of policies and plans.

The Level 1 study also has a multi-functional role and will be used as a tool to assess flood risk for spatial planning, producing development briefs, setting constraints, informing sustainability appraisals, identifying locations of emergency planning measures and requirements for flood risk assessments.

Through guiding development decisions, a critical aim of the SFRA is to avoid inappropriate development in areas at risk of flooding, and to direct development away from areas at highest risk.
