Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Check
This involves a search of your individual criminal record to establish whether you are a suitable person to drive members of the public. The DBS is a central organisation that deals with all checks of criminal records for the Council.
More details about the DBS and their on-line application tracking service can be found on the GOV.UK.
Certificates of Good Conduct
Where the Disclosure & Barring Service are unlikely to have any information on a person, due to a short period of residence in the UK, applicants must obtain a certificate of good conduct from their relevant embassy or consulate.
The current Disclosure & Barring Service provide information on most embassies/consulates.
Such checks will be at the cost of the applicant, and will need to be authenticated, translated and sealed by the embassy/consulate.
Further information on Certificates of Good Conduct is available on the Home office website.
An applicant must have held a full UK or EEA driving licence for a period of at least 3 years and complete a DVLA mandate form.
All applicants will be required to undergo a Group 2 medical examination which can be carried out by any registered doctor who has sight of your medical records.
Certain medical conditions may mean that you may not be permitted to drive professionally and it is important that the Council know about such problems to ensure the safety of the public.
Please talk to the Licensing Service before organising a medical.
Driving Standards Assessment
New applicants are required to complete a Driving Standards Assessment.
This is undertaken by the Road Safety & Sustainable Transport Team here in Telford & Wrekin Council.
Street Knowledge Test
New applicants are also required to attend Driver Awareness Training and sit a Street Knowledge Test.
It is important that you have a good knowledge of the area in which you are going to work, and that you understand what is expected of you as a licensed driver in Telford and Wrekin.
The test consists of multiple choice questions on the geographical area of Telford & Wrekin, and also questions on the conditions of licence for Dual drivers.
It is necessary to provide the Council with two business references that will be verified. References will not be accepted from anyone with a contact to the taxi trade, or from a family member.
