Having identified that getting out and meeting new people can be a challenge for us all, at times. We have developed the Community Connector project with a focus on supporting people who lack confidence or are socially isolated.
Community Connectors are volunteers who offer short term buddy support to individuals enabling them to connect with activities, appointments, courses and volunteering opportunities. They encourage participation until the supported individual feels comfortable and confident to access their community independently.
We always try to match the Connector with an individual who lives near them and through 6 contacts will support them to integrate into their community.
Times and days can be flexible and once decided, both will meet at an agreed location and make their way together to the group/activity.
Community Connectors will enable individuals to build their confidence, self-esteem and extend their social networks. They will be fully trained and supported in the role for which we will complete an enhanced DBS check.
Benefits for the volunteer include:
- increased confidence and self esteem
- access to training
- possible progression to new opportunities
- opportunity to get involved with the local community and make a difference
- develop new skills and make new friends
- improve own emotional and physical health.
As a Telford & Wrekin Council volunteer travel expenses will be reimbursed.
Community Connectors help to make a real difference to people, your support would be key to their success.
If you are interested in becoming a Community Connector and would like more information please contact the Community Participation Team.
