Something Big is happening to Telford. We have launched our £250 million vision to transform Southwater into a new heart for Telford. Visit www.heartoftelford.co.uk to find out more.

A major event to kick start the beginning of the £250m Southwater regeneration scheme will take place at Telford & Wrekin Council’s Civic Offices on Monday.

The council, along with its partners Southwater Event Group and the Homes and Communities Agency, will be unveiling the Southwater scheme, its new website and a few surprises aimed at promoting the scheme to the local community business and inward investors.

Monday’s launch takes place at 10am in the Reception Suite at the council’s Civic Offices. Guests will include keynote speakers from the council and the Southwater Event Group.

The Southwater scheme will transform an area of the town centre running from the shopping centre to The International Centre with the aim of creating a major regional leisure and business attraction.

The new Southwater will include office space, a new learning and media centre, two new hotels, bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, a leisure hub with a space for a swimming pool and multi screen cinemas – creating a vibrant night time economy around a pedestrian High Street.

There will also be hundreds of homes including apartments and town houses, a community medical facility and a new Meeting Point House.

Speakers at the launch will include Telford & Wrekin Council leader Andrew Eade, chief executive Victor Brownlees, Southwater Event Group chief executive Tom Gray and Homes and Communities Agency Investment and Regeneration Manager David Charmbury.

Council leader Andrew Eade said: “The Southwater regeneration scheme will transform Telford town centre into a vibrant social and economic hub and give the borough a centre to be proud of.

“It will mean new jobs, new opportunities and more inward investment and provide a place that people want to work in, live in, visit and enjoy.

“Monday’s launch is a major event for the borough and will provide a springboard for the council and the business community to move forward together to realise a fantastic vision for the borough of Telford and Wrekin.”

Tom Gray, Chief Executive of the Southwater Event Group, said: “We’ve worked in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council, and with other organisations and businesses, to bring this development to life, and we’re all looking forward to a dynamic future for the town.

“Our ambition is to cement The International Centre’s position as one of the leading event venues in the UK, and we believe a combination of investing in our own facilities and developing the town’s infrastructure will help us to create an even more attractive convention destination.”

David Charmbury, Investment and Regeneration Manager for the Homes and Communities Agency, said: “The launch of the new brand marks another key milestone in the delivery of transformation for the Southwater area and wider Telford Town Centre and is crucial to the successful marketing and delivery of this key project.

“The Agency is delighted to be working in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council and the Southwater Events Group”.

The Southwater investment is part of a broader half billion pound regeneration of Telford and Wrekin, including £240m being spent on creating Sports and Learning Communities to replace existing secondary schools and millions more on regeneration of the borough’s historic local centres.
