Our objective is to be an inclusive organisation, ensuring that best practice in equality and diversity is embedded into all our policies, strategies, operational plans, practices and service delivery.
Our vision for equality and diversity is to work to:
- a common vision and shared values
- improve the quality of life for all by reducing inequalities
- tackle discrimination
- build strong cohesive communities
- acknowledge that diversity brings an added value to the lives of all who live, work and travel to the area
We are working to achieve this under a number of themes, such as creating an environment free from harassment and hate crimes, ensuring equality and diversity in the workplace and ensuring that all under represented and hard to reach groups are effectively informed and involved in the decision making process of the Council and other related issues that affect communities.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission is an independent body working to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and build good relations. The new Commission merges the former Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), Disability Rights Commission (DRC) and Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC).
