Sensitive Communication
Effective communication is a skill that can be learnt and practised. This course is for any practitioner who works closely with vulnerable children and their families where good communication is vital in developing effective relationships so that children can be best supported.
Length of session: 3 hours
Course content:
This workshop will include:
- how to avoid "blame based" language, eg. "you need to understand...." and "you can't do that" etc
- an explanation of what non-judgemental means and reinforce the need to make informed judgements
- responding sensitively to words or actions that indicate potential harm, but in a way that safeguards the child
- the importance of getting to know cultural and ethnic differences in communication preferences
- the importance of recognising that feeling vulnerable can lead to acting defensively
