Pilot broadband scheme to save cash and improve access
Published on 15 June 2010
Telford & Wrekin Council is to explore a private sector partnership aimed at enabling remote parts of the borough to access broadband while delivering major savings for the authority.
The pilot partnership with specialist company Networks by Wireless is aimed at proving new technology works in an area of the borough with no existing broadband capacity.
The scheme is being investigated as the council's current corporate network contract for broadband services expires.
Networks by Wireless has indicated that the council could make considerable savings utilising wireless technology.
In addition to the potential savings, the council will work in partnership with Networks by Wireless to deploy WiMax broadband capabilities, under their spectrum agreement with UK Broadband Limited. This will enable Networks by Wireless to sell broadband services to private residents and businesses.
If this is successful, the revenue generated will be shared by the council as a means of further reducing the cost of the corporate network.
It is expected that the £120,000 pilot will start in August in Kynnersley Moor and Preston Moor with evaluation completed by September or October. Other disadvantaged areas could benefit from this technology by early next year.
Councillor Sean Kelly, cabinet member for an Efficient and Community-Focussed Council, said: "This plan has the double benefit of delivering substantial savings for the council compared with the current cost of the corporate network and more importantly, opening up broadband access to areas currently unable to access it.
"The aim of the proposed pilot will be to evaluate wireless technology in the more remote areas of the borough although work needs to continue to ensure the best options available are considered."
The £120,000 will be jointly funded by council and Networks by Wireless and is expected to be approved by Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet on June 22.
