Games success for Telford and Wrekin
2012 has been a momentous year for the UK. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games took place place in London and in venues across the UK. This coupled with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations made this a most memorable year.
Ten Telford athletes took part in both the Olympics and Paralympics.
Five local athletes competed in the Olympic Games: Danny Williams (judo), Gemma Howell (judo), Kelly Edwards (judo), Nick Woodbridge (modern pentathlon) and Alison Williamson (archery).
Five local athletes competed at the Paralympic Games: Danielle Brown (archery), Gemma Almond (swimming), Mickey Bushell (athletics), Sam Scott (sitting volleyball) and Nick Beighton (rowing).
Mickey Bushell won gold in the T53 100m wheelchair racing, setting a new Paralympic record of 14.74. He also came fourth in the 200m version of the event.
Danielle Brown made it a double success for the borough with a gold medal in the Women's Individual Compound Archery.
Telford & Wrekin Council painted one of its buses gold in recognition of the achievement by the borough's two gold medal winning athletes during the 2012 Paralympic Games.The bus has graphics of Mickey punching the air as he crosses the line and Danielle aiming her bow in full Team GB kit on its exterior as well as the message "Congratulations to all our Olympians and Paralympians - we're proud of you."
