Director Update

Dear Colleagues,

We have reached the end of term and it has once again been a term like no other!  Back in September we were anticipating a challenge, but recognise there has been a need for an extraordinary effort to ‘keep the show on the road’.  Our personal thanks to everyone who works in our early years settings, schools and post 16 provision.  To our leaders, you have been truly exceptional, although we know you will say you’re only as good as your team.  Everyone should and must feel proud of their achievements.

Below is a short video of thanks, please do watch and listen to what our children say about you.  Telford and Wrekin are very lucky to have you all and we are proud to work in continued partnership with truly dedicated colleagues.

As we head into the Christmas holidays it is time now to rest and enjoy sometime away (and get your booster if you haven’t already! – see below for further details).  We wish you all well and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Very best wishes

Jo and Simon

£11m expansion of Holy Trinity Academy in Priorslee approved

A £11m proposal to expand Holy Trinity Academy in Priorslee and increase school provision, has been approved by Telford and Wrekin Council’s planning committee today, 16 December 2021.

The agreed budget allocation of £11m will allow for the development of both the school and its sporting facilities which will benefit the wider community while providing a further 300 new school places for children in the area.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education and Lifelong Learning said: “We are pleased this school expansion has been approved it has been is a very carefully considered proposal where safeguarding and pupil provision have been balanced with ensuring the quality of life for residents is maintained in terms of sporting and educational provision.

“We’re sure the improved sports provision including new floodlit 3G football pitches for evening and weekend use and changing facilities will be a huge benefit to the community with large informal areas of public space still available for use.

Holy Trinity Academy head teacher Angus Neal: “This development represents an exciting milestone for the school and the community.

“The new facilities will bring real improvements to the quality of education available to all present and future students while welcoming more sports clubs and individual users to use the venue during weekends and evenings in a safe environment.

“The project is the culmination of extensive consultation and aims to balance the growing demand for extra provision, safeguarding needs and also serving the recreational needs of the community.”

Working in partnership with the school, and diocese, the council approved a plan including the following enhancements:

  • An additional 300 places for local children within the ward of Priorslee and those that border it including those children who will move into the area as part of the planned housing developments within the schools vicinity;
  • 15 classroom extensions, (nine general and six science classrooms)
  • Improvements/increase in dining provision
  • Improved community provision of two enclosed grass football pitches and a 3G floodlit multi-use pitch.
  • Public changing facilities for those using the 3G multi-use pitch

School will continue to run as normal during the expansion phase with disruption to pupils and the surrounding residents kept to a minimum.

The plans are available here and Wilmot Dixon have been appointed as the principal contractor.

Now that planning approval has been granted, work is planned to commence in early 2022 and due for completion around the end of 2022.

Telford & Wrekin Youth Climate Summit

Each secondary school in the borough is invited to send 30 pupils to Telford & Wrekin council’s Youth Climate Summit on:

  • Thursday 24 March 2022
  • 10am-4pm
  • Venue: Enginuity in Ironbridge

This is the first summit of its kind for the council and only the 4th in the country. Telford & Wrekin are excited to host this event at such an important time in the fight against climate change.

The aims of the youth summit will be to educate, empower and mobilise young people in the local area. Providing key climate change knowledge, realistic actions they can take to mitigate against it, resources and connection to others with the same goals as well as outputs that can contribute to our climate change actions.

The event is being created in collaboration with a group of young people so that the event can be tailored to their ideas and interests, crucially giving them ownership of summit.

The day will include a range of talks, interactive activities, videos and Q&A/ workshop sessions, with an audience of approximately 230 secondary school students, from year 10 to year 13.

If you are interested please send an email to lauren.hands@telford.gov.uk and an informal chat about the event can be arranged.

Halesfield Day Nursery – Christmas Tree Festival

Children and staff from Halesfield Day Nursery were pleased to become involved in the Christmas Tree Festival held at St Andrews Church in Shifnal, this year. The nursery sponsored a Christmas Tree for the event and made lots of beautiful eco-friendly decorations to adorn their tree. The children were very proud of their contribution to the community and loved going to see all of the trees on display.

Helen Childs, nursery manager said “We took a few groups of children to the church- it is such a wonderful learning opportunity for them. We loved meeting up with Reverend Chris and Lay Reader Alan Nash, they are always so welcoming. It was wonderful seeing all the trees put together by our wonderful community was fantastic”.

Daily testing of close contacts for COVID-19 – updated guidance for schools

This is an update from the Department for Education.

Adults who are fully vaccinated and all children and young people aged between 5 to 18 years identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19, are strongly advised to take a lateral flow device (LFD) test every day for 7 days and continue to attend their setting as normal.

Going forward, adults who are fully vaccinated and all children and young people aged between 5 to 18 years and 6 months identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19, are strongly advised to take a lateral flow device (LFD) test every day for 7 days and continue to attend their setting as normal, unless they have a positive test result.

We have now updated the schools COVID-19 operational guidance and will shortly update other sector guidance documents to reflect this. Updated frequently asked questions will also available soon on the early years and primary schools document sharing platform, and the secondary schools and colleges document sharing. platform.

Daily testing of close contacts of COVID-19 will help make education and childcare settings safer and help keep children and young people in face-to-face education.

Update on COVID-19 vaccinations

This is an update from the Department for Education.

People aged 18 years and over, and those aged 16 years and over who are at risk (including health and social care workers) will now be offered a booster dose of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine.

The new Omicron COVID-19 variant is spreading fast. Anyone who is unvaccinated or who hasn’t had their booster is at even greater risk from COVID-19 and more serious illness. Vaccines are the best way we can protect ourselves and help keep children and young people in face-to-face education.

People aged 18 years and over, and those aged 16 years and over who are at risk will be offered a booster dose of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine. Please do encourage those in your settings, including staff, to take up the booster dose.

You can pre-book your booster dose online if it’s been 2 months (61 days) since you had your 2nd dose and you are:

  • aged 30 and over
  • aged 16 and over with a health condition that puts you at high risk from COVID-19
  • a frontline health or social care worker

16 and 17 year olds can get two doses of the COVID vaccine. They can book an appointment through the national booking service and walk in centres are available.

The Health and Social Care Secretary announced on Monday 29 November 2021 that young people aged 12 to 15 in England will be offered a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, following advice from JCVI. Parents of children aged 12-15 that have not yet had their first vaccine can book their child’s first vaccination slot over the winter break via the national booking system.

Schools are asked, where possible, to direct parents to the out-of-school route as they break up for the winter holidays. In some cases, parents will be able to get their booster at the same time as their child getting their first vaccine.

Information on vaccination for 12 to 15 year olds can be found in the COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 12 to 15 guidance.

Further information on the coronavirus booster vaccination and booking a vaccination can be found on NHS.UK.

An information leaflet on what to expect after vaccination is available to download or order.

Update on the delivery of the 12 to 15 COVID-19 vaccination programme

This is an update from the Department for Education.

Young people aged 12 to 15 in England will now be offered a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at a minimum of 12 weeks from the first dose.

Young people aged 12 to 15 in England will be offered a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at a minimum of 12 weeks from the first dose, following advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

NHS England have now confirmed that, as with first doses, healthy school-aged children aged 12 to 15 will be able to receive their COVID-19 vaccination in their school next term, as well as having the option to receive the vaccine out of school, such as through vaccination centres. These offers will run in parallel.

Vaccination for this group will continue to be deployed primarily by the school age immunisation service (SAIS). In school vaccination will begin from Monday 10 January 2022 and all schools should have received at least one visit before February half-term. We expect most schools to require multiple visits so vaccines can be administered to all consenting pupils. SAIS teams will be in touch with schools from the start of next term to discuss what is best for their circumstances

For some very small schools, on-site vaccination may not be appropriate but alternative arrangements will be put in place to ensure timely, accessible, and equitable vaccination for these children.

More information for schools on the vaccination programme and how second dose delivery will work, including information on consent gathering, will be published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shortly.

We are grateful to schools for their ongoing support with the rollout of the 12 to 15 vaccination programme. Vaccinating young people is increasingly important for keeping them, their friends, family members and teachers safe as we approach the Christmas holidays.

Over the Christmas holidays, parents can already book first vaccinations for their child, if aged 12 or over, through the NHS booking system. Second doses will be available for eligible children by Monday 20 December.

Further information on vaccination for 12 to 15 year olds is available on the NHS website.

Delivery of face coverings to support contingency stock

This is an update from the Department for Education.

Most staff, pupils, and students already have access to face coverings but it is recommended that all settings have a small contingency stock of face coverings available if an individual has forgotten or damaged their own. To support this, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) will deliver face coverings to settings. This will be a similar number to those delivered to settings in March 2021.

Secondary schools should expect to receive a delivery before the end of term, while deliveries for early years, primary and FE settings will happen in January. These face coverings are being provided by DHSC at no cost to your setting.

For any queries or complaints relating to deliveries or missing items, please contact the DHSC PPE helpline (provided by UNIPART) on 0800 8766802, identifying yourself as an education setting. Alternatively, you can email dfeppequeries@unipart.com and your query will be handled by the helpline team. For any questions on Department for Education (DfE) face covering policy, please refer to the DfE guidance or call the DfE (COVID-19) helpline on 0800 046 8687.

Home COVID-19 test kits for January 2022

This is an update from the Department for Education.

Home COVID-19 test kits, to enable your workforce, pupils and students to continue testing at home during the spring term, continue to be available through the online ordering system.

Asymptomatic twice weekly at-home testing, using Lateral Flow Devices (LFDs), will continue in the new year, to help reduce transmission of COVID-19 and identify cases early. We strongly encourage staff, pupils and students (in year 7 and above) to continue regular LFD testing and to report their results.

You will be able to continue to order test kits to enable your workforce, pupils and students to continue testing at home during the spring term through the online ordering system. If you need additional test kits for your staff, pupils or students to test on return in the first week of January 2022, please place an order before you break up for the Christmas holidays.

Any orders placed between Thursday 9 December 2021 and 5pm on Tuesday 28 December 2021 will be delivered in the week commencing 3 January 2022. When placing your order, please be clear, when completing the delivery instructions, that your order is required for testing during the first week of January 2022 and confirm the date that your setting reopens.

Orders for test kits required after the first week of January 2022 and throughout the spring term should be placed when you return in January 2022. The usual ordering and delivery pattern will resume from Wednesday 5 January 2022, so any orders placed by 5pm on a Tuesday will be delivered during the following week.

There will be no deliveries scheduled during week commencing 20 December 2021 or week commencing 27 December 2021.

Further information can be found on the document sharing platform for secondary schools and colleges or the document sharing platform for primary schools and early years settings.

Order devices through the ‘Get Help With Technology’ service before Christmas

This is an update from the Department for Education.

Information on the ‘Get Help With Technology’ service, including how to view your allocation or place an order.

All organisations with an allocation of laptops and tablets were invited to order additional devices in November. To view your allocation and place an order, please sign in to the Get Help With Technology service.

If you have not yet ordered, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible as we will not attempt deliveries between Friday 17 December 2021 and Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Please note, we cannot guarantee that preferred device types will be available when you order so you may wish to choose an alternative device type if you need them urgently.

You have a maximum of 10 working days from the delivery date recorded on your proof of delivery note to report to us that a device is faulty or ‘dead on arrival’. If you are ordering at the end of term, please ensure that somebody will be available to check the devices within 10 working days of delivery.

For further information about how to order, read how to order DfE laptops and tablets.

Due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, it is more important than ever to get your booster vaccination:

Walk-in local vaccination clinics
No appointment is needed.
If you are aged 18 and over and had your second dose 3 months (91 days) ago, you can go to a local walk-in clinic to get your booster. All vaccines will be given on a first come, first served basis. Clinics may close early if all allocated vaccines have been used.

COVID-19 Vaccination Walk-in and Pop-up Clinics

Book your booster appointment
If you're aged 30 and over and had your second dose 2 months (61 days) ago, you can book your booster vaccination
You will be offered appointment dates from 3 months (91 days) after the date of your second dose. From Wednesday 15 December, all people aged 18 to 29 years old will be eligible to book a booster dose.

Happy Healthy & Active Holiday Winter Programme is now underway

As you may be aware, the Happy Healthy & Active Holiday (HHAH) Winter Programme is underway and we would like to ask for your help in reminding eligible children/families who are in receipt of income-based FSM to register and book onto the activities so that they can benefit from the scheme. I know you are extremely busy during these times but if you are able to remind some families of this additional support over the winter holidays before the break up for Christmas that would be really appreciated.

We have two helpful video tutorials on the front page of the website to guide people step-by-step in registering and booking to make it as easy as possible for them.

Secondly, if you are aware of any children who do not meet the eligibility criteria but feel that they would benefit from participating in the holiday clubs, we do have some flexibility with the criteria that allow a new 15% cohort to attend. Please read the attached information about this and follow the instructions if you identify children that can meet this 15% cohort.

For more information about the Happy Healthy & Active Holiday Winter Programme visit the website:

Egress Phishing Email Alert

A member has reported receipt of phishing emails sent via the secure messaging service Egress.

The National Anti-Fraud Network have provided information on phishing emails sent via the secure messaging service Egress. Please keep an eye out for this and use the contact details below if you come across an instance of this fraud.

It is believed that the email addresses of six schools have been hacked, which has enabled fraudsters to send phishing emails to five other schools.

The fact that the messages appear to have been sent by a secure system has allowed the fraudsters to target several schools. Egress have confirmed the fraudsters have used an old style Egress switch logo in their message.

Egress are aware of similar phishing attacks and advise users to “hover your cursor over the link to see the site you are being taken to. If it is a legitimate Egress email the link will take you to https://reader.egress.com/ with a unique code on the end”.

If you would like to report any instances of the above information being used in similar fraud attempts please email them to intel@nafn.gov.uk and the details will be forwarded to the relevant teams.
