Kickstart scheme

Telford & Wrekin Council were able to offer up to 100 work placements to young people as part of the Government’s nationwide £2 billion Kickstart scheme.

The Kickstart scheme was developed to create job opportunities for young people:

  • aged 16 to 24 years
  • at risk of long-term unemployment
  • in receipt of universal credit
  • under the supervision of a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) job coach.

The Kickstart offer:

Job placements were made available across the Council in a rage of different areas such as, customer services, business admin, environmental, schools and outdoor work.

Each role being a paid placement, with a minimum of 25 hours worked per week including dedicated time for training. The jobs they were offered were new roles created just for Kickstart and did not replace any existing roles.

You can find below a brief list of the type of placements that were available:

  • Business support officer with various placements in different teams across the council
  • Leisure roles placed in different leisure centres around Telford
  • ICT roles both within the council and based in schools
  • Teaching and sports assistant roles
  • Catering roles based in both primary and secondary schools
  • A range of customer service roles based in various teams
  • There were a range of roles based in outdoor areas such as Telford Town Park
  • Different roles based in education, both as business support and teaching assistant
  • There were assistant support worker roles available as well as cleaning roles available.

The posts were offered on a 6-month fixed term contract. Participants were employed on Telford & Wrekin Council terms and conditions and were required to comply with our policies of employment.

Weekly information sessions

Job box supported the Kickstart recruitment by offering weekly sessions for employability advice.
