Census

The 2021 census is coming here

The census is a national survey that happens every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

The next one will take place on Sunday 21 March 2021 known as Census Day.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) organises the census in partnership with local authorities.

Why do you need to complete the census?

The success of the Census 2021 is vital to Telford and Wrekin in order help the borough get the services needed now and in the future such as transport, education and healthcare.

It is estimated the population of Telford and Wrekin has grown by around 17,000 people since the last census in 2011. That could mean an extra 4,000 children needing school places and another 17,000 people needing GP services.

This year’s census will help us to understand our local population and their needs. The money the council receives from government is directly linked to the number of people counted on the census so it is important that everyone takes part on 21 March 2021.

How do you take part?

From early March households will receive their census packs from Office for National Statistics with details of how to complete the census online. It will take around just 10 minutes to complete.

Paper forms of the census are available for those people that are unable to complete the Census online.

You must complete the census by law

You must complete the census by law. If you do not, or if you supply false information, you could be fined up to £1,000. Some questions will be clearly labelled as optional: it is not an offence if you do not answer these.
