Tell Us Once - births

If you have just had a new baby, there are lots of things that need to be done. Firstly, you will need to register the birth, and then contact various Government departments and local services that need to be told about them. Once, you had to contact all of them individually.

However, we are now able to provide the Tell Us Once service at the time of birth registration, helping you give information to the Department for Work and Pensions and, if you wish, then pass this on to a number of other organisations.

How do you contact us to use this service?

You can either book an appointment online or phone 01952 382444 during the hours of 9am to 1pm or 2pm - 5pm, Monday to Friday to book the appointment to register the birth and tell us whether you wish to complete the Tell Us Once information at the same time. Please note: Tell Us Once will only be completed if you bring a completed Child Benefit claim form in at the time of the birth registration (download an application form).

How can the service help you?

You often have to contact several Government departments and parts of the Council to give them the same information about a birth. It is important that you do this as soon as possible, as it may affect you entitlements - such as to Child Benefit, Working Tax Credits or Child Tax Credits.

We want to make this easier for you, so if you want to use this service after registering a birth, we will simply ask you some additional questions. This will also mean that you won't have to send a copy of the birth certificate in the post, as we will contact the organisations that need to know on your behalf.

What happens to the information?

The following organisations can be contacted, if you ask us to:

  • Department for Work and Pensions - Jobcentre Plus
  • Housing Benefit Office
  • Council Tax Benefit Office
  • Library Services
  • Children's Services (Family Connect)
  • HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) - Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit.

Using this service can, where certain conditions are met, help speed up an application for Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit with HMRC - if you are receiving benefits that relate to your income (e.g. Income Support or some types of Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance).

How will we treat the information you give us?

The information you give will be treated securely and confidentially. The organisations who are contacted will use the information to update benefits, credits or help start up services. They may use this information in other ways, but only if the law allows.

What information you will need to bring to use this service?

  • You will need to bring in a completed Child Benefit form (if making a claim)

and information of:

  • the National Insurance number and date of birth, address, telephone number and details of any benefits being received for the person(s) or partner named in the birth register, if living at the same address
  • permission from anyone named in the register who does not attend the appointment to share their information for Tell Us Once purposes.

How much does the service cost?

There is no charge for using the Tell Us Once service. This is a service that Telford & Wrekin Council, and your local district and borough councils, have worked together on in order to help you.

How will I know who has been told?

When you leave your appointment, you will be given a letter that details your reference number and which departments we have notified on your behalf, together with our contact details in case you later have a query. These departments may contact you separately to confirm that the relevant processing has been completed.
