Primary Authority

If you run a local business that trades across council boundaries you may have had experience of being subject to differing requirements from the many different local authorities that regulate you. This can be frustrating, unproductive and time consuming.

What is Primary Authority?

Primary Authority is a national scheme that allows a business to form a partnership with a single local authority and this partnership, once it has been nominated by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (known as Regulatory Delivery), has a statutory basis that other enforcing bodies must observe.

How would entering into a Primary Authority partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council help my business?

It is a way of helping your business to improve its compliance with legal requirements. The Council can then guide the way that other local authorities regulate your business so this is effective, efficient, consistent, avoids duplication of effort and unnecessary legal action. It does this by providing tailored, assured regulatory advice to you over and above the level of advice already provided free of charge. This saves you time and money.

What sort of legal requirements could my business enter into a Primary Authority Agreement with Telford & Wrekin Council?

  • Food Safety.
  • Food Standards.
  • Environmental Protection.
  • Trading Standards (criminal and civil law; product compliance).
  • Licensing.
  • And many more.

How much does it cost?

The issue of costs will be discussed at the initial meeting with your business. The charges are necessary to ensure that there are sufficient resources available to support these valuable partnerships. Each business that enters a Primary Authority partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council will be entitled to an initial three hours of advice free of charge.
