Community involvement and time period for the project

Work on a prestige project to improve the surface of the Severn Valley Way from the Ironbridge to The Sidings was completed in January 2022. The project was initiated and supported by the local borough Councillor Carolyn Healy and resulted in the installation of a substantial new stone surface and improved drainage on the route over a six week period.

Why the project was implemented

The Severn Valley Way is an important local route for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders in the World Heritage Site, providing access to the Ironbridge, as well as being part of the national Sustrans Network. Surface deterioration had resulted in extensive muddy areas, poor surfaces, and standing water on the path.

Project funding

The project was funded by an additional £50,000 allocation from the Council for public rights of way improvements. Following a site assessment by the Rights of Way Team, the construction phase of the project was delivered by our Contractor, AJB Contracting Ltd. The surface of the Severn Valley Way from the Ironbridge to The Sidings was scraped and prepared, then sub-base was added to raise the level of the path. Surfacing material was then added to provide a camber and a smooth topping. Additional drainage was added at the side of the route to displace any surface water.

The benefits resulting from completion of the project

The new surface has reinstated the accessibility of the path for a wide range of users. Including wheelchair users. This has provided an enhanced facility for both the local and national sustainable transport links. As well as the benefit to users, the improvement will provide a benefit to tourism to the World Heritage Site and the local economy.

Testimonials/comments

Our Senior Rights of Way Officer commented, “The development and promotion of sustainable transport links within the borough is key to the Council’s Transport Policy and Green Agenda. The Severn Valley Way is an important strategic route with a link to the Silkin Way and the planned residential development at the former Power Station site.”
