Re-opening of a footpath - public rights of way news

Project details

An unusual project to reinstate an important local right of way in Little Wenlock, following a collapse of the path due to natural erosion below the surface, was completed in February 2022. Following an assessment of the site the Rights of Way Team oversaw the delivery of the work.

Why the project was implemented

The footpath is part of a series of local walks promoted by Little Wenlock Parish Council and the collapse of this part of the path on private land had rendered this important link unusable, with the only alternative being a road with no pavement. Reinstatement of the path had to have due regard to the legislation covering the stability of the sub-soil under the path and the associated area.

Project funding

The project cost of £1,700 was funded by the Council budget allocation for public rights of way improvements. A number of surveys preparatory to the reinstatement of the path were undertaken in accordance with legislative guidelines. The surveys were able to establish that the area of erosion could not be infilled or otherwise obstructed, therefore, working with our specialist Contractor a solution was found by the installing a sturdy metal plate over the collapsed area and covering it with a stone surface.

Testimonials/comments

Our Senior Rights of Way Officer said, “Working with accredited environmental professionals and contractors, the Council has been able to provide a solution that complies with the appropriate legislation, whilst ensuring that an important local route is reinstated for the benefit of users.”
