Work experience opportunities for students aged up to 16

Year 10 is a key time when students undertake work experience in their local area, to learn about the world of work.  Telford & Wrekin Council is committed to supporting and providing high quality work experience placements, designed to give students from the age of 14 to 16 a realistic, engaging and enjoyable insight into the workplace.       

Here you will find out more about what work experience placements we currently offer, how to apply and some hints and tips to help you get the very most out of your work experience placement.

Some examples of what you will learn:

  • reception desk duties
  • activity set up and takedown
  • cleaning
  • shadowing lifeguards (leisure centres)
  • shadowing fitness suite supervision or stewarding (ice rink)
  • responding to customer enquiries.

It is not essential, but if you are interested in working early in the day, late in the day or at weekends this is when we are at our busiest and would give you a fuller experience.

Please note: applicants for Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre will need to have relevant experience of snow sport and a strong interest in working outdoors.

Following the same ethos as the residential centre in North Wales, Arthog Outreach operates in Wellington and creates opportunities to encourage participation in adventurous activities closer to home. Arthog Outreach offers a variety of adventure and environmental activities on and off site.

What you will do:

  • assist with the delivery of Outdoor Education sessions
  • carry out routine tasks to support the running of a busy Outdoor Education Centre.

You should demonstrate a strong interest in the working in the outdoors, and adventurous activities.

A telephone conversation may be required before the placement can be offered. Please include contact details in your application form.

Please note: that unfortunately we are unable to offer placements April - September).

What you will learn: 

  • assistant ranger
  • patrolling the park on foot, cycle and vehicle
  • practical tasks outdoors, sweeping, scrub clearance, painting
  • liaising with the public
  • wildlife rescue
  • assisting with events
  • completing daily inspection sheets.

You must be able to work outdoors in all weathers.

This team provides the Council's corporate communications and supports many of the Council's services to get the public involved in and understand what they do. The team uses a range of different media and digital platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, as well as more traditional methods such as press releases, media interviews, publications and campaigns. The service is made up of a team of corporate communications experts and graphic designers and is responsible for most of the Council's marketing to promote our services to residents and other groups.

In a placement with the team you are likely to get an understanding in the areas such as:

  • how the council uses social media
  • analysing digital channels
  • filming and editing
  • writing a range of content.

Please note: you must demonstrate an interest in communications and preferably be following a media related course. Placements will be considered for one week duration only. 

What you will learn:

  • transporting children from home to school
  • transporting adults with learning difficulties and disabilities to social care provision
  • supporting people to access services and social events through transport - community buses
  • Dial-a-ride - bespoke door to door service, transporting those who are unable to access public transport due to disabilities and vulnerabilities
  • working in partnership with Age UK - Transporting people to Age UK Centres.

We provide school meals and commercial catering, as well as cookery sessions to schools and carers.
We also deliver training to both internal and external customers on the following areas:

  • food preparation
  • customer service
  • cash collection
  • food hygiene
  • health and safety.

Idverde is Europe’s largest provider of grounds maintenance services and landscape construction projects, with an annual turnover of €500m and 5,500 colleagues operating throughout the UK, France, and the Netherlands. We offer a holistic range of services to support the creation, maintenance and management of landscapes throughout the UK, working with both public and private sector clients (including Telford & Wrekin Council) to deliver bespoke solutions for each project’s unique challenges. Students will be expected to conform to health and safety at all times and will receive adequate PPE and Training during an induction on the first day. A pre work experience meeting maybe arranged with the student to ensure that the correct PPE is provided before the first day.

Working Hours will be from 8am till 3.30pm Monday to Thursday. Friday 8am till 1pm.

Example schedule:

Day one

  • morning - introduction to the supervisor, teams and induction at Granville House, Donnington
  • afternoon - working with the litter team (litter pick and bins).

Day two

  • morning - report at Granville House. Duties required at Telford Town Park will be general park maintenance which may include planting, weeding, pruning, litter picking, sweeping, emptying of bins, etc
  • afternoon - general park maintenance.

Day three

  • morning - report at Granville House. Observe and assist with play inspections around the borough, report any faults to the relevant supervisor and client. Tasks may include litter picks, emptying bins and general park/play area maintenance
  • afternoon - assist with the play inspections.

Day four

  • morning - report at Granville House. Duties required at Telford Town Park will be general park maintenance which may include planting, weeding, pruning, litter picking, sweeping, emptying of bins, etc
  • afternoon - general park maintenance.

Day five

  • morning - report to Granville House. Duties will include, observing and assisting with the mechanics for general tasks which will include cleaning, deliveries, and tasks that do not include mechanical operation
  • afternoon - debrief and finish.

Are you ready to start your engineering journey? You will have the opportunity to work alongside the various teams across the highways, engineering and transport teams which will give you a foundation to build your career upon as an Engineer.

You will gain an understanding of various disciplines and will see projects in various stages of delivery, from inception to construction. There is an opportunity to work in the following areas:

  • traffic and yoad safety engineering
  • highways engineering
  • geotechnical engineering
  • drainage engineering
  • structural engineering
  • transport planning
  • project management and delivery
  • streetworks
  • streetlighting
  • contract management.

  • We are only able to consider 1 week placements in July 2022.
  • Private sector housing covering housing enforcement work, environmental health, safer streets project work, affordable warmth and empty homes.
  • The placement will involve being in the office and attending site visits and meetings (some face to face and some hybrid via teams) 
  • The role will also cover visits to tenants homes (risk assessments and relevant protection equipment will be provided)
  • The role will be of interest to anyone wanting to understand a career in environmental health, technical housing surveying, project management work or architecture or anything housing related 
  • The placement will be office based at the Wellington Civic Centre offices in Larkin Way.

  • Development Consultancy
  • Project Management.

Please note: we are currently only able to offer placements two days per week (Monday and Tuesday).

Our Registration, Celebration and Bereavement Services team undertake statutory registrations for Births, Marriages and Deaths across the Borough, perform Wedding and Civil Partnership Services and manage burials in our three cemeteries.

In this work experience placement, you will assist with:

  • maintaining digital and physical registration records, including historic records
  • preparing our Ceremonies suite for weddings, partnerships, and other celebrations
  • meeting and greeting couples and their guests who are attending ceremonies
  • taking bookings for registrations
  • liaising with customers contacting the service.
