Consultations - Carers Consultation

Who can get involved? For the survey we consulted with Telford & Wrekin Council Community Panel Members who had identified that they were carers. We also sent a survey to Carers who had registered with the Carers Centre in the last 12 months.

For the Focus Group we invited carers who were members of the Telford & Wrekin Council Community Panel.
Start date 3 March 2014

Reason for consultation The Carers Commissioning Officer has identified that despite census information indicating that there are approximately 18,000 carers in Telford & Wrekin, less than 2000 are registered for information and advice with either the Council or Carers Centre.

The aim of this consultation is to understand why so few carers are registering for this and to understand what can be done to overcome these reasons.
Overview The consultation was undertaken in two parts: firstly a survey was sent to carers asking them details about whether they were aware advice and information was available and if so, how they had become aware. We also asked whether they had registered. Importantly, we wanted to for those that had registered, what had prompted them to register and for those that had delayed registering or chosen not to, what the reasons were for this.

The surveys gave us some useful information as to what these reasons for not registering might be.

The second part of the consultation was undertaken as a focus group with carers in which we checked out the information we had already received and asked carers what needed to happen to overcome these reasons for carers not registering for support and advice.
What happens next? The feedback from the consultation will be used to consider further carer recruitment strategies.

The results will be taken to the Carers Partnership Board for discussion where actions will be agreed.

The results will be shared with people who provide care in order that they can in turn share information about support and advice available with carers in an appropriate way.

This will include assessing care providers and other professionals to make sure all publicity materials are produced with the findings of this consultation in mind.

The results of the survey will soon be available on the Carers Page (Having your say) on My Life the links below.
