Project funding

The project was funded by the additional Council budget allocation for public rights of way. The total cost of installing the bridge was approximately £8,500.

Time period for the project

Preparatory work on the project commenced at the start of October 2021, and the bridge was completely installed by the 19 October 2021.

Community involvement

The project was initiated following concerns raised to the Council by a local user. The site was assessed by the Rights of Way Team, and the construction phase of the project was delivered by the Council’s Contractor, AJB Contracting Ltd.

Why the project was implemented

The existing bridge was old and had deteriorated so that it was hazardous to use, particularly when it was wet. The route that the bridge served is important, not only for leisure and recreation, but as it also provides a safe alternative to using the vehicular highway.

Project details

The existing bridge structure was removed from the site, and a new wooden footbridge was installed to replace it. The path adjacent to the bridge was cleared of vegetation, and the surface was improved.

The benefits resulting from completion of the project

The new bridge provides a safe alternative to the previous structure thereby improving accessibility for the entire length of the right of way. The fact that the route can be used as an alternative to the vehicular highway has enhanced safety for pedestrian users in the locale.

Testimonials/comments

Our Senior Rights of Way Officer commented, "A key feature of the rights of way network is that it often provides a safer and more direct alternative for non-vehicular users. Replacing the bridge on this path has ensured that such an alternative is available for all users, including the children for whom the path provides a route to school."
