Repair and installation of a new footpath - public rights of way news

Community involvement

Work on a well-received project to improve a right of way from Marlborough Way to the Ironbridge Way in Ketley was completed by the Rights of Way Team in March 2022. Concerns had been raised by the local Parish Council, local residents and users about flooding and the deterioration of the surface of the route.

Why the project was implemented

The route is an important and well used link connecting the communities, of Newdale, Ketley, and Lawley Bank, via The Ironbridge Way. It also provides access to Newdale Primary School via Marlborough Way. Surface water run-off had often created a water-logged and boggy area at the junction with The Ironbridge Way, and the steps on the bank had become uneven and difficult to use.

Project funding

The cost of the work, which was carried out by our Contractor, was £14,750, and was funded by the Council. The work included scraping back the existing surface to increase the width of the route and regulate the height of the steps, installing a new safe and hard wearing surface, and raising the height of the path with additional drainage installed to alleviate flooded sections.

The benefits resulting from completion of the project

Delivery of the project has improved access for all users in all weathers and all seasons providing better sustainable transport routes to connect communities and the local school. Additionally the newly regulated steps have improved access for less-abled users.

Testimonials/comments

Lawley & Overdale Parish Council stated, “The improvements to the pathway were very much needed and are very much welcomed to allow our residents to use it again. Within just a few days of the works being completed, residents had contacted the Parish to express their appreciation of the improvements. This is a result of the partnership working between our Environment Community Liaison Officer and the Public Rights of Way Officer and we look forward to working together on future schemes for the benefit of the community.”
