Telford & Wrekin Council’s Holiday Activity and Eat Well Fund, provided holiday fun and nutritious meals to children and young people in the Borough from Summer 2020 until Easter 2023.

Background

Telford & Wrekin Council recognised that the School holidays can be a challenge for some families. This can be due to increased costs such as providing meals, childcare and reduced incomes due to reduced working hours. Also, there is no provision for free school meals during the holidays. There is growing evidence that this can impact on the health and wellbeing of children.

Free holiday clubs can be part of a community solution and can deliver a positive impact for Children and Young People. Evidence suggests that holiday clubs work best where there is regular and accessible provision of a diverse range of positive activities which include physical activity and a healthy nutritious meal. The benefits are even better when children and their parents are involved in food preparation.

In 2018 to support local families the council piloted the Holiday Hunger Scheme in five areas of the borough, this has now developed into the Holiday Activities and Eat Well Fund which has extended to 12 wards.

What is the Holiday Activities and Eat Well Fund?

The Holiday Activities and Eat Well Fund was a grant Telford & Wrekin Council awarded to local community organisations. This funding enabled providers to run activity sessions during the school holidays for children in school years 3 - 11.

Sessions included physical and creative activities and a nutritious meal in order to combat hunger during the school holidays.

Activity sessions under this grant were offered in the main school holidays between Summer 2020 and Easter 2023.
