Review of the Telford & Wrekin Local Plan

Update on review of Telford & Wrekin Local Plan

The Council launched a review of the Telford & Wrekin Local Plan in 2020 and has undertaken consultation on Issues and Options.

On 11 May 2021 the Government set out its intention to bring forward new legislation that will change the planning system in the autumn of this year (2021). The stated aim of the Government is to completely overhaul the current planning system and in particular the system under which Local Development Plans are prepared. These proposed changes include;

  • the introduction of a housing requirement figure for Local Planning Authorities;
  • zoning land for development; and
  • nationally set development management policies for determining planning applications.

It is important that the Council consider the details of any changes and the impact this may have on the review process. There is no clarity on transitional arrangements for Local Authorities that have been undertaking a review of their Local Plans.

In light of this proposed legislation the council has decided to pause the next formal stage of the review pending clarity from Government.

This does not impact on the Telford & Wrekin Local Plan, which is the adopted development plan for the borough and runs until 2031.
