What we do
We are a team of skilled Highway Engineers and Transportation Professionals who provide statutory consultation responses and advice to the Local Planning Authority regarding the use of our roads and highways due to new development taking place.
We also approve the construction detail of all new roads, housing estates and changes to the existing highway network required for new development. The construction works are also supervised by us to ensure they are built in line with the approved drawings and the workmanship is to the required standards.
How does this fit into the development process
As a statutory consultee in the development management process we have a duty to ensure the highway network continues to operate safely and traffic queuing and delays are kept to a minimum, as a result of new development.
We have the power to request changes and improvements to the highway network and request money from the developer in order to fund necessary improvements that ensure the impact of new development is reduced when necessary. If impacts cannot be reasonably reduced, then Highways Development Management can object to development proposals.
By auditing and supervising the construction of all new roads, as a result of new development, we ensure that things are built correctly, operate properly and that new residents and the wider public can enjoy newly constructed housing estates and streets.
A project the team has recently completed
Crudgington Roundabout
As a result of new development proposed on the site of the ex dairy in Crudgington the Highways Development Management sought the installation of a roundabout to replace the notoriously dangerous Crudgington Crossroads.
The scheme was instigated by the HDM team and involved many negotiations with planners, developers and local stakeholders, in order to ensure the correct scheme was brought forward.
The physical works were delivered by a contractor operating on behalf of the developer Shropshire Homes. However, details for scheme were approved by the HDM Team and the delivery was supervised on site by the teams Site Engineers.
The scheme took 9 months to complete but did involve the realignment of the A442 and the diversion of some major public service infrastructure. It was completed in December 2024 and has proven already to be a great success.
