Physical activity in the early years allows children to develop fundamental skills that support their physical development through life. As well as a child’s physical development, physical activity also influences their cognitive and social developments and helps to foster a healthy lifestyle and support their overall wellbeing.


NHS Better Health, previously known as Change4life resources have a large variety of physical activities, from their 10 minute “Shake Up” games designed to get children moving to their A to Z list of sports and activities.


'Busy Feet' is a unique resource for preschool children from action songs, singing, dancing and movement, warm-ups and short activities through to stories and adventures plus inspiring activities that will help to promote the importance of eating healthily, this resource is aimed to provide hours of fun active learning for all.


The Chief Medical Officers in the UK have set out minimum recommendations for levels of physical activity that should be aimed for at differing life stages. For children under 5 there are varying recommendations of duration and activities dependent on their specific age and developmental milestones. The guidelines can be found on the government website or have been summarised by the NHS.


Healthy Movers is a resource designed by the Youth Sport Trust to improve 
children’s physical development, support their social and emotional wellbeing and create healthy, happy children that make a good level of development across the EYFS curriculum. The resource comprises of ready-made activities for you to deliver to support children’s development.


BBC super movers have a collection of videos specifically aimed at those in the Early Years Foundation Stage. These videos get children moving to follow the video and can be useful to use as movement breaks.
