Apprenticeship case studies
Katie is a Policy and Development Apprentice and is studying towards a level three qualification in business administration.
What attracted you to an apprenticeship with Telford & Wrekin Council?
I wanted to learn more about how the work the council does impacts on residents of the borough and how I can contribute.
Where are you hoping your apprenticeship will take you?
I am hoping that my apprenticeship will allow me to further my career options and eventually help me to find a full time position where I could continue to do work that I enjoy.
What are your future career aspirations?
I would like to continue working in business support/admin and possibly continue working within the council. I would also want to look at furthering my qualifications and possibly complete another apprenticeship in the future.
What are the benefits of apprenticeships?
I think that being able to gain a qualification while also gaining experience and workplace skills is a major advantage of an apprenticeship.
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
They are a great opportunity to gain and develop the skills required in the workplace and gain a qualification. It’s worth looking into if you think that you would struggle in full-time education as even though you still have learning to do, it isn’t full-time in a classroom.

Victoria is a Civil Engineering Apprentice and is studying towards a degree qualification in Civil Engineering and Transportation at Telford & Wrekin Council.
What attracted you to an apprenticeship with Telford & Wrekin Council?
The apprenticeship has provided an opportunity to work in several different engineering teams whilst being able to gain a qualification alongside it.
This has helped me to gain a holistic idea of how the Council supports the borough in relation to adopted highways, and my contribution towards it.
Where are you hoping your apprenticeship will take you?
I’m hoping to complete the degree course and become an incorporated engineer with a professional institution.
Due to the broadness of the apprenticeship, I have undertaken, this should provide a good foundation for my career in the future.
What are your future career aspirations?
I would like to decide on an engineering discipline at the end of my apprenticeship and continue working within the chosen team for the Council.
I may look to further my qualifications in a specific area once embedded in a particular discipline.
What are the benefits of apprenticeships?
One of the main benefits would be to achieve a relevant qualification, whilst gaining experience on the job.
Having the support of fellow professionals and colleagues within the workplace helps apply understanding to the knowledge gained from academic based learning, which would not be possible if studying full time.
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
Completing the requirements for apprenticeships is hard work and requires a lot of commitment and effort.
However, the rewards are valuable and provide a good foundation towards future opportunities.
I would recommend apprenticeships to people of all ages, whether starting out in their career or those changing careers for a new challenge.

Beth is a Short Breaks Coordinator in the Children with Disabilities team and is studying towards a level four qualification in project management.
What attracted you to an apprenticeship with Telford & Wrekin Council?
I joined Telford & Wrekin Council as a junior apprentice in 2016, as I wanted to gain work experience rather than be a full-time student. Since then I have built on my qualifications and am now studying for a level four qualification.
I have moved teams twice since I joined, and have felt fully supported within my roles and have made friends for life whilst learning skills that I will take with me throughout the entirety of my working life.
Where are you hoping your apprenticeship will take you?
I am hoping that I will be able to further my career within project management and the apprenticeship will give me the skills and confidence to do so. Once I have completed the apprenticeship, I may explore the opportunity of studying for a degree in project management. This apprenticeship will provide me with the solid base that I need.
What are your future career aspirations?
I am still not fully sure of what I would like to do in my career long term, but I know that everything that I have learnt so far and will continue to learn will help me in whichever path I decide to take.
What are the benefits of apprenticeships?
The main advantage is that I can study for a qualification whilst also gaining experience in the workplace. I find it useful to be able to discuss my apprenticeship with colleagues, and also have support from my assessor and peers. All coursework and revision can be completed during working hours, so my weekends and evenings are not taken up with studying as they would be if I was at college or university.
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
I am very passionate about apprenticeships, and I always recommend them to people who aren’t sure what they would like to do or be, regardless of their age. They are a great way to get a flavour of the working environment whilst earning money and gaining a qualification. My first apprenticeship was in 2016 and I made friends that I still talk to every day. There are so many to choose from that people may not be aware of, but there is almost certainly something for everyone.
