Victoria Park

Image of Victoria Park

Victoria Park is situated in Newport by the disused canal. The park is 2 hectares in size. The building of the Newport branch of the Birmingham to Liverpool Junction canal started in 1926. Thomas Telford was the engineer chosen to build the canal. In 1836 the Newport branch of the canal was completed. In 1847 the canal was renamed to the Shropshire Union Canal when it was taken over by the London and North West Railway. The canal features a lock and roving bridge that allowed horses to cross from one side of the towpath to the other. The black shed which was built in 1840 is within Victoria Park and it is believed to be one of the last remaining wharf sheds in the Country.

Newport Canal was notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1986 due to it being one of the best localities for aquatic plants in Shropshire. Part of the SSSI falls within the Victoria Park boundary.

Water safety

We want everyone to be safe when visiting our sites that have water features within them.

We work closely with the Royal Life Saving Society on managing water safety on our sites and further details on advice can be found on the RLSS website.

When visiting this site, here are a few tips to keep safe around the water:

  • keep out of the water at all times
  • never allow children to play near the water unless accompanied by an adult
  • don't run near the water, you may trip and fall in
  • learn how to help in an emergency; if you see someone in trouble in the water never jump in yourself. Stay calm and phone for help. Some sites across the borough have water safety signs and equipment, please only use the equipment when required.

For more information on how to rescue a person from drowning please visit the RLSS website.
