National guidance
Historic England is the government’s statutory adviser and consultee on all aspects of the historic environment and its heritage assets. Visit the Historic England website. There is a wealth of information and guidance available on their website. Key documents are:

- Visit the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) website
NHLE is the only official, up to date, register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England (listed buildings, scheduled monuments, protected wrecks, registered parks and gardens, and battlefields).

In 'map images' resource you can access and view all the maps scanned as high-resolution, colour, zoomable images. The maps date between 1560 and 1964 and relate primarily to Scotland. There is also maps of areas beyond Scotland, including maps of England and Great Britain, Ireland, Belgium, and Jamaica.

The home of the digital Historical map archive for mainland Britain. Part of the historic joint venture with Ordnance Survey this site contains historical mapping from Ordnance Survey's pre and post WWII county series mapping at various scales dating from c.1843 to c.1996.

Shropshire Archives hold archive material such as historic plans, photographs and archived documents for our area. Some is available online, other material can be viewed by appointment in Shropshire Record Office in Shrewsbury.

HER is the primary source of information about the historic environment of the county – archaeological sites, finds and features, historic buildings, structures and landscapes.

Shropshire Maps is designed as a research guide to show something of the wealth of maps held at Shropshire Archives and help people to access maps which may be relevant to their research.
