Gigabit Telford is part of our digital strategy to create a better borough through digital innovation, providing seamless connectivity for all and encouraging more take-up and better access to information and services online.
Telford & Wrekin Council has partnered with Virgin Media O2 Business to deliver a multi-million pound boost to connectivity infrastructure. It will provide access to ultra-fast full fibre network connectivity to more than 200 public buildings, including schools, libraries and council offices making it easier for us to do business and easier for people to access our services online.
The infrastructure will also help to future proof Telford and Wrekin for further growth across the borough.
Through this partnership, Virgin Media O2 Business is also investing in a series of local social impact initiatives to help tackle digital exclusion, support Care Leavers and boost employment. These initiatives range from a targeted apprenticeship scheme, work experience opportunities, a ‘Digital Learning Fund’, Digital Inclusion Fund, volunteering and a donation to support Telford’s local offer to Care Leavers.
Work began on the first phase of the infrastructure rollout in late 2022, with the final phase, which includes connecting up schools, libraries, council offices and other public buildings, is expected to be completed by March 2025.
