Ketley Bank, Oakengates and St Georges community cycling project (KOG)
KOG - Community cycling project for Ketley Bank, Oakengates and St Georges
Enabling local people to enjoy cycling for leisure, exercise and travel.
A project that will encourage people to cycle more by helping to teach people how to ride and fix bikes, provide courses in schools, and skill up volunteer "Ride Leaders," is due to start in April. Known as KOG, the Ketley Bank, Oakengates and St Georges community cycling project will be organised by Telford & Wrekin Council. A partnership involving Telford and Wrekin Council, Energize and Shropshire Cycle Hub secured £10,000 from Sport England's Together Funding to fund the project. Additional funding was also secured from Energize and Telford & Wrekin Council’s Safer Stronger Community Partnerships, making the total project fund over £12,500. KOG will work with schools, community groups, community centres and religious establishments in Ketley Bank, Oakengates and St Georges to encourage cycling and help people overcome their barriers and obstacles to cycling. The project includes training for volunteers for 'workforce development' and the forming of a community cycling group.
Would you like to get involved?
- Would you like to learn how to ride a bike safely?
- Do you need to develop your cycling skills and confidence?
- Does your bike need any repairs?
- Would you like to learn how to fix and maintain your bike?
- Would you like to join a local cycling group for social bike rides, led by trained ride leaders?
- Would you like to be trained as a Ride Leader and volunteer to help run our local group?
- Do you have an unused bike you can donate so someone else can benefit from it?
If so, the KOG cycling project is for you!
As part of the project, our team will be visiting local primary schools for family bike maintenance sessions and bike ‘try out’ sessions open to all – ask your local school for details. We will be visiting local community groups, to talk about the benefits of cycling, demonstrate safe cycling and teach basic skills to fix or maintain a bike. Also, the KOG team will be working with local residents to increase their cycling confidence and create a friendly, informal cycling group. We may be able to help you get hold of a bike too, for you or a family member, so you can take part.
Community groups – we’d like to hear from you!
Right now the KOG team would especially like to hear from any community groups in the area who would like a visit, such as Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts, over 50’s groups, youth clubs, adult charitable or social groups etc.

Learn to Ride with Travel Telford
The Travel Telford team are supporting the KOG Community Cycling Project by working with five schools in the project area of Ketley Bank, Oakengates and St Georges, plus neighbouring schools that have children who attend from those areas.
The team are providing Bike Try Out events to encourage people to have a go on a bike and to start the conversation around cycling. Maybe you haven’t ridden a bike since you were a child, maybe you never had the opportunity to learn or your child needs a helping hand to start cycling on two wheels.
Travel Telford are also offering Family Bike Maintenance sessions and their popular Dr Bike service, where local families can have their bikes repaired or given a check over by a qualified mechanic, ensuring they are road worthy and ready for adventure!
This compliments the Bikeability cycle training which all schools have taken part in to equip Year 5 and Year 6 children with the skills to cycle safely in their local environment.
Learn to Ride Sessions
The team are also providing Learn to Ride sessions for children, adults and families from Ketley Bank, Oakengates and St Georges from the Bike Hub in Telford Town Park in late September, to equip you with the skills to handle a bike safely and ride confidently on two wheels. Riding a bike is a life skill but we understand varying circumstances mean that not everyone has the opportunity to learn.
Sessions for families:
- Wednesday 6 September 2023, 4.30pm - 5.30pm
- Wednesday 20 September 2023, 4.30pm - 5.30pm
- Saturday 30 September 2023, 12.30pm - 1.30pm.
Sessions for adults:
- Wednesday 13 September 2023, 10am - 11am
- Wednesday 27 September 2023, 5pm - 6pm
- Saturday 30 September 2023, 9.30am - 10.30am.
Sessions for children:
- Saturday 30 September 2023, 11am - 12noon
- Saturday 30 September 2023, 2.15pm - 3.15pm.
