Green binImportant information:

Charges for additional green bins

Due to significant financial pressures and in order to protect front line services, it is no longer possible for the council to continue to provide these containers free of charge. From the 4 March 2024 there will be a one off payment of £25 for each additional green bin you request.

Please visit the FAQs tab for more information.

Top tips on managing your green waste

  • Home composting is an excellent way to manage your garden waste, especially if you produce lots on a regular basis, view more information about home composting.
  • you can take any extra garden waste to either of our household recycling centres (HRCs), they are open 7 days a week, between 9am - 5pm, view more information about our HRCs.
  • to prevent any garden waste sticking to the bottom of your bin you can line the base with a sheet of newspaper
  • you can also place up to 4 bags of additional green waste in clear biodegradable sacks next to your green bin on your scheduled collection day, do not use black sacks as this is associated with refuse and if the crew can't see what waste has been presented, they will not be able to take the additional bags.

Telford & Wrekin Council are committed to continue to provide an all year round, non-chargeable green waste collection service for residents.  However, due to significant financial pressures and in order to protect front line services, it is not possible for the council to continue to provide additional green waste containers at no extra charge. More than 65% of other local authorities across England charge for green waste collections (including the first green waste container) as an added service. The charges usually include an annual fee to include the collection service and one green bin.  However, Telford & Wrekin Council have kept additional charges for green waste to a one off cost and for additional green bins request only.

The charge will be introduced for any additional green bin requests from the 4 March 2024. There will be no retrospective charges for additional green bins which were provided before this.

We will continue to provide replacement containers free of charge.

Yes, the charge of £25 will apply to each additional bin required.

Yes, the charge is the same for any size as the charge is to cover management of the provision of the container and delivery.

Residents can dispose of any extra green waste at our household recycling centres for free, the HRCs operate an e-permit system so please check our website before travelling on our bins and recycling page.

You can also place up to 4 bags of additional green waste in suitable biodegradable sacks next to your green bin on your scheduled collection day. Please do not use black sacks as this is associated with refuse and if the crew can't see what waste has been presented, they will not be able to take the additional bags. Reusable garden sacks/bags will be emptied and returned with your green bin.

Householders can choose to home compost but to subsidise this would be counterproductive in reducing costs, it is also not something every household will be able to do. By offering one green bin at not charge we are still allowing residents to recycle their garden waste and we will continue to provide guidance on home composting.
