Appeal against a school decision

Attention - school admissions and school appeals

Due to the current COVID-19 situation we envisage a serious delay to any in-year applications for school places. We recognise that our service is important to you and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

Update - School admission appeals - new government guidance

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the legal restrictions that have been implemented in respect of social distancing, the Government has made emergency legislation which temporarily amends regulations which govern the way in which schools admission authorities set up and run appeals against the allocation of school places by the admissions authority.

The temporary regulations now prevent the usual practice of face-to-face hearings where parents or guardians get to hear the case for why a school is unable to offer a child a place and then have the opportunity to directly address the independent appeals panel as to why their child should be offered a school place.

For appeals in respect of Telford and Wrekin schools the Admissions Authority has decided to make use of telephone conferencing.

  • Appeal forms to be submitted in the time frame as already published on our school admission appeals page.
  • Admission Officers will prepare a statement which explains why your preference could not be met i.e. why your child could not be offered a place at your preferred school.
  • The Clerk will send a copy of the Admissions Officer’s statement and all the information you have submitted to the Appeal Panel members.
  • You will be invited to an appeal panel hearing, together with the Admissions Officer and the Appeal Panel Member.
  • Following the appeal, the Clerk will then write to you with the Appeal Panels’ decision, setting out the reasons for the decision to uphold the appeal or not. The Clerk will also advise the Admissions Officer of the decision. Outcome letters will be issued within 7 calendar days.

We operate a parental preference scheme and, wherever possible, will offer your child a place at your preferred school - as indicated on your application form. However, there are certain circumstances when it is not possible to offer a place, for example; when the year group is full.

Appealing before your child starts school

If you have applied for a place to start school in September 2021 and you have not been allocated a place at your preferred school you can appeal the decision.

Please note: for secondary school appeals, the online form can only be used to appeal for Burton Borough School or HLC Secondary School. For any other secondary school an appeal form should be obtained directly from the school.

If you wish to appeal for a school which is outside of Telford & Wrekin please contact the home Local Authority.

If you wish to appeal you will need to log in to the School Admissions Portal within My Telford and follow the process and instructions provided.
