Renewal of vows

COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) information

Update 14 June 2021

Maximum number of ceremony attendees in the Register Office’s Wrekin Suite to remain at 30.

Following the recent update in COVID-19 restrictions from Government from 21 June 2021, there will no longer be a maximum number cap for attendees set out in law. Instead, the number of attendees at weddings, civil partnerships and receptions will be determined by how many people the venue or space can safely accommodate with social distancing measures in place. This will be based on the COVID-19 risk assessment of the venue or outdoor space, and the measures put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.

For ceremonies taking place in the Wrekin Suite at Telford & Wrekin Register Office the maximum number of people allowed to attend remains at 30, to allow for safe social distancing to take place. This includes the couple, witnesses, all guests, and children of any age. It does not include anyone who is working, such as the registrars, or a photographer.

We are very happy to be able to offer couples the option to renew or re-affirm their marriage or civil partnership vows with a secular ceremony that can form the centrepiece of a celebration. The ceremony has no legal standing and is only available to married or civil partnership couples.

This ceremony is the perfect way for couples to celebrate their relationship at any point in their lives, but it can provide an ideal framework for a special celebration - for example, to mark a silver, ruby or golden anniversary. It's also an ideal choice for couples who wish to re-affirm their vows in the presence of family and friends if the original ceremony took place abroad.

Where can I have a ceremony and what will it cost?

Please note only card payments can be taken by the Registration Service. We are unable to take cash payments.

It is possible to arrange for a ceremony to be held at Telford and Wrekin Register Office from Monday to Saturday. This would cost £225 (inclusive of VAT and room hire).

Ceremonies may be held at any of our approved ceremony venues on any day, including Sundays and Bank Holidays. This would cost £225* (inclusive of VAT) for Mondays to Saturdays and £255* (inclusive of VAT) for Sundays and bank holidays.

*Please note individual venues will make their own charges for room hire, etc. The charges stated for approved premises are for the services of the celebrant only.

When visiting the Register Office to make your arrangements, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit of £35 (inclusive of VAT). When this deposit is paid, you will be given information to help you choose the ceremony you would like.

How do I arrange a ceremony?

For a ceremony at Telford and Wrekin Register Office, you should first contact the Superintendent Registrar to check availability.

For a ceremony at one of our approved venues, you should make a provisional booking with the venue in the first instance and then contact the Superintendent Registrar to ensure that a celebrant will be able to attend.

You will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit of £35 when booking your ceremony, and we will also need to see your marriage or Civil Partnership certificate. You will then be given your Renewal of Vows Pack, which will help you make your choices on the content of the ceremony.

On average, ceremonies take about 20 - 30 minutes. Every ceremony is unique and will be created to meet your specific needs. Please note you will also need to ask two people to sign the commemorative certificate as witnesses.

We will arrange for you to visit the Register Office no later than a month before the ceremony to discuss the content and finalise details with the celebrant, and also to pay the balance of the fee.

How do I book the Registrar?

Contact us on 01952 382444 and ask the Superintendent Registrar to check the availability of dates for you.

You can pre-book your ceremony at least two years in advance by paying a non-refundable booking fee, giving you the assurance that staff will then be available on your special day.
