Honorary Aldermen of the Borough

The conferring of the title Honorary Alderman is the highest award that can be made to a former Councillor in recognition of rendering eminent services by way of exceptional contrubtion to the Borough and its Council.

The position of alderman is non-political and as well as promoting civic pride in the Borough and its Council, the role of Honorary Alderman involves attending civic events as invited, assisting with hosting Mayoral receptions or functions as required, supporting the work of the Mayor’s Charity, acting in an ambassadorial role for the council when requested to do so and assisting the council to perform cross party functions.

Honorary Aldermen are proposed and seconded by serving Members of the Council. There must be support for the nomination by not less than two-thirds of the Members voting at a special Council meeting convened for the purpose of conferring the title.
