About the Armed Forces Covenant

Illustration of the armed forces covenant gold award logoIn 2020, Telford & Wrekin Council received the Gold Award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (DERS) - the highest accolade in the Ministry of Defence's Employer Recognition Scheme.

The Gold Award marks our commitment to our Armed Forces staff and their families through:

  • ten extra paid days leave for reservists
  • supportive HR policies in place for:
    • veterans
    • reserves
    • Cadet Force adult volunteers
    • spouses and partners of those serving in the Armed Forces.
  • delivery of events celebrating the Armed Forces
  • support to local cadet units.

Telford & Wrekin Council has played a key role in establishing and maintaining an Armed Forces Covenant for the borough. The covenant is a pledge, taken by public and private sector organisations, that together they acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society that they serve with their lives.

About the ERS

The ERS encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same. The scheme encompasses bronze, silver and gold awards for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the armed forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

The ERS is designed primarily to recognise private sector support although public sector organisations such as the emergency services, local authorities, NHS trusts and executive agencies are also eligible to be recognised.
